Philosophy PhD Programs: Temple University and Arizona State University (HPS)
In this blog post I provide some detailed, up-to-date information about two philosophy PhD programs. This week's picks are Temple University and Arizona State University, History and Philosophy of Science (HPS). These programs were chosen randomly, using an app called "Pickster." (Next week's picks are listed at the bottom of this post.) This information comes from the APDA database, and was updated by my research assistant, Anna Durbin, using the program's placement page and what she could find online. The running tally includes select numbers from all of the programs covered so far.
tl;dr
- Arizona HPS is a new graduate program, with a small number of graduates so far
- Temple is a mid-sized program, but few graduates participated in the survey
- Arizona HPS graduates focus on Science, Logic, and Math, whereas Temple graduates focus on Value Theory and History and Traditions
- Both programs have below average academic placement
- Both have above average gender diversity
Overall placement, 2012-present
Arizona HPS had just 12 PhD graduates in this period, whereas Temple had 31. Of Arizona HPS's 12 graduates, 10 went into academic or unknown employment, and they placed 2 of these into tenure-track or other permanent academic positions (20%), with neither in a program that offers a PhD in philosophy. Temple placed 7 of 26 into permanent academic positions (27%), with 2 in philosophy programs with a PhD (8%).
Of Arizona HPS's other graduates, 2 are in postdoctoral or fellowship positions, 5 have temporary academic placements, 2 are in nonacademic positions, and 1 has no or unknown placement.
Of Temple's other graduates, 2 are in postdoctoral or fellowship positions, 15 are in other temporary academic positions, 5 are in nonacademic positions, and 2 have no or unknown placement.
Too few graduates of either program provided salary information or job preference to report.
The current database values for all 2012 and later graduates now in permanent academic positions, out of those in academic positions overall, is 42%, with 14% in programs that offer a PhD in philosophy.
Areas of Specialization, by Category
Including all past and current students in the APDA database, 15% of Arizona HPS students are in LEMM, none are in Value Theory, 15% are in History and Traditions, and 69% are in Science, Logic and Math. 23% of Temple students are in LEMM, 37% are in Value Theory, 31% are in History and Traditions, and 9% are in Science, Logic, and Math. Arizona HPS, 50% of graduates 2012 onward placed into permanent academic positions were in History and Traditions, and 50% were in Science, Logic, and Math. The majority of those placed from Temple were in History and Traditions (57%).
Note that the current database values for all past graduates and current students are 28% in LEMM, 34% in Value Theory, 24% in History and Traditions, and 14% in Science, Logic, and Math.
Diversity
Including all past graduates and current students, 40% of those from Arizona HPS are women, as are 38% of Temple students.
The current database percentage is 31% for all past graduates and current students.
Too few from either program provided race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic information to report.
Program Rating
Too few responses were available to report program ratings, both overall and on specific measures, for both programs.

Temple students provided one public comment on the program overall:
Graduate advisors are committed to seeing their students succeed in their careers after leaving Temple with a PhD in philosophy. Both during and after the time students are in the grad program, the professors provide support and information to help them navigate the job search and hiring processes. The curriculum covers a broad range of courses to give students a well-rounded philosophical education.
