Philosophy PhD Programs: Running Tally 2019-2020
In this sortable, searchable table I keep a running tally of some of the information from the weekly posts on philosophy PhD programs (the posts are linked in the table). These posts are from mid March 2019 to late June 2020, covering 135 PhD programs. For earlier information, see our 2017 infogram.
Columns from "Mean Rating" to "1st Gen" include all past graduates and current students, whereas columns from "2012-2019 Grads" to "Avg Salary" include only graduates from 2012 to the time of the relevant post. A blank space means that there is an insufficient number in that category to report (i.e. fewer than 5). Information on the columns is provided below.
Note: It is currently sorted by student rating and then alphabetically.
Mean rating refers to ratings provided by survey participants to the question: "How likely would you be to recommend the program from which you obtained or will obtain your PhD to prospective philosophy students?" Ratings range from 1 for "definitely would not recommend" to 5 for "definitely would recommend." All current students and past graduates with email addresses on file were invited to take the survey (around 70% of all past and current students in the database). The average rating given by all current students and past graduates is 4.0 ("somewhat likely").
All AOS refers to the distribution of past graduates and current students with a first-listed AOS in one of four categories: Language, Epistemology, Metaphysics, and Mind (L); Value Theory (V); History and Traditions (H); or Science, Logic, and Math (S). Programs are marked according to the majority/plurality of all students. The average distribution, across all students, is 28% LEMM; 34% Value Theory; 24% History and Traditions; and 14% Science, Logic, and Math. AOS category is assigned as follows: L contains Action, Epistemology, Language, Metaphilosophy (incl Experimental), Metaphysics, Mind, and Religion; V contains Aesthetics, Applied Ethics (incl Bio and Medical), Education, Ethics, Gender / Race / Sexuality / Disability Studies, Law, Meta-Ethics, Social / Political, and Value (General); H contains 19th / 20th, African, American (incl Latin American), Analytic (History of), Ancient, Asian, Comparative, Continental (incl Phenomenology), German (incl Kant), History (General), Medieval / Renaissance, and Modern; S contains Biology (incl Environmental), Cognitive Science / Psychology / Neuroscience / Linguistics, Decision Theory, Economics, Logic, Math, Physics, Science (General), and Technology.
Women refers to the percentage of women among past and current students divided by the total number of women and men (other genders are not included in this percentage). Gender was determined in the first place by self-report, and then by an algorithm based on the first name. Overall, 31% of current students and past graduates are women.
POC refers to the percentage of current students and past graduates who identify as "Chicanx/Latinx/Hispanic," "American Indian or Alaskan Native," "Asian," "Black or African American," "Pacific Islander," or "Two or More Races" divided by the total number of current students and past graduates who provided us with race/ethnicity information. Overall, 20% of current students and past graduates identify this way.
1st Gen refers to the percentage of current students and past graduates who reported the highest level of education for their parents as "some college or university" or lower when answering the question "What is the highest education level obtained by at least one of your parents/guardians?" 23% of students overall identified this way.
2012-2019 Grads refers to the total number of graduates identified for this time period, using self-report, placement pages, and other sources of public information.
Perm Ac refers to the percentage of 2012 and later graduates in academic or unknown placement from this program who now have a permanent academic position, according to self-report, placement pages, and other sources of public information. Note that this is a deviation from past versions of this tally and other reports from the APDA project, since it removes those in nonacademic positions from the total graduates used to calculate placement rate.
PhD Ac refers to the percentage of 2012 and later graduates in academic or unknown placement from this program who now have a permanent academic position at a program that offers a PhD in philosophy, according to self-report, placement pages, and other sources of public information.
Avg Salary refers to the current mean annual salary in US dollars provided by past graduates in answer to "What is your approximate yearly salary?" The average over all students is $68,542.
